The Whiteflag Protocol

Co-inventor, -author and -maintainer of the protocol (2016-2024)
Advisor to The Whiteflag Foundation

Whiteflag enables entities protected under humanitarian law to make themselves known to prevent collateral damage and casualties in conflict zones.

The Whiteflag Protocol allows organisations to notify others of their planned and ongoing activities, digitally and in real-time, for more effective aid and military deconfliction.

This can also be used to communicate information about natural and man-made disasters, thus creating shared situational awareness beyond conflicts. The signs and signals can be securely communicated using a decentralised protocol, the Whiteflag Protocol, that describes a trusted messaging network for disaster & conflict areas.

The underlying blockchain secures the Whiteflag messages and ensures Whiteflag is neutral and cannot be controlled or manipulated, enabling a trusted global messaging/communications network.

Additionally, the protocol provides means for authentication and message encryption.

- For more information, see www.whiteflagprotocol.org
- Find the specification and supporting software on Whiteflag's GitHub page
- Read (former) Commander of The Netherlands' Armed Forces luitenant-admiral Rob Bauer's address during the ICRC conference on Humanitarian Warfighting Law on 13 October 2017, The Hague.

The Whiteflag Protocol is currently in progress of transitioning from T.R.L. level 5 to 6.

Jade Codex

A logic- and standards-based, calculation- and modeling method, applied to (product) manufacturing (2018)

Leveraging contextual data-processing, data-feedback mechanics and logic-based computation, manufacturers are enabled to directly take action and create impact on existing- and/or emerging concerns. Put simply: a database system designed to measure, track and market the circularity of products continuously over time.

NB: For those interested in mathematics: the method shown to relate cyclical to linear processes, is an application of "Euler's Identity".

Proof-of-work mining:
Blockchain under the hood

(2017)
A high-level overview of the proof-of-work consensus mechanism: outlining the fundamental (cryptographic) algorithms and computational- and physical engineering principles that 'underpin' it,
as well as a perspective on how this novel distributed computation-based architecture is applied in a global financial context.

The Quantum Resistant Ledger

Core architecture contributor 2017-2020

QRL is a security-oriented blockchain platform, secured by XMSS (eXtended Merkle Signature Scheme). XMSS is a NIST-approved post-quantum secure cryptographic digital signature scheme.

QRL is the first industrial implementation to utilize IETF specified XMSS; a hash-based, forward secure signature scheme with minimal security assumptions and reusable addresses that comes with NIST approval.

My Esthetics of film

My approach of esthetics is mainly inspired by ancient Greek classics (Homer, Aristotle's Poetics), as well as the Renaissance art and the later Romanticism of the Enlightenment.

On the art of film:
Film is a highly Aristotelian art form. It rests heavily on logical structure, continuity and consistency. As a student of film, you right away are taught the principles of "unity of action, unity of time and unity of place", principles which are commonly referred to as "Aristotelian rules" for dramatic structure. Aristotle, in his "Poetics", first described these principles and specifically placed emphasis on "plot". The modern art of film is a derived, a secondary art form: it principally rests on plot, i.e. on literature. In essence, the art of film is translating literary plot-structure development into cinematographic narration. As it is derived from the art of literature, therefore by definition all the principles of literary drama logically apply to the medium of film as well.

But the language of film is something relatively new, meaning "how" you translate plot development into cinematographic storytelling, offers a whole new realm of artistic endeavor to be discovered. Film is the post-Industrial Revolution art-medium; it involves modern age, highly complex technology, incl. all sorts of advanced chemicals, mechanical devices and electronics, and nowadays: digital devices and computers. It is also the most encompassing art form, as it integrates all the others: literature, performing arts, visual arts and music. It is for these reasons it is perhaps the most demanding, and I suspect, also the most engaging of all art forms.

On the 'unorthodox' plot of Clair de Lune:
When still studying film, I learned of Venetian playwright Carlo Gozzi (1720-1806), who proposed only a limited number of dramatic situations might occur in any story or performance, and that these were later worked out in French writer Georges Polti's "The Thirty-Six Dramatic Situations" (1895), containing a descriptive list of these proposed categories of possible dramatic situations. While writing the scenario for Clair de Lune, I aimed to devise a plot structure that would not strictly fall within Polti's descriptive list. Although there are elements of several of Polti's categories occurring throughout the film's plot (e.g. imprudence, supplication, deliverance, hero journey), it does not seem to fall clearly in one of Polti's categories specifically. A theoretical classification I would propose is "The confront with nature".

Inger Indolia - "Dirge of Ecliptic Wizardry", "Deathbed of Bloodshed", "Momentum of Atrophy", "Damnum Minatum", "Mother Morgana" and "Forlorn Spectral Kingdoms" - Live in Helmond (16-06-2001)

In 2001, Inger Indolia (Romanian for "mourning angel") set out on a small tour with several other Dutch bands, who'd formed the so-called "Dutch Black Metal Package". (Black Metal is the typically 90's style of dark and fast "heavy metal music" primarily distinguished by one theme, attitude and inspiration - and of which it is the celebration: independence, i.e. "thinking for yourself, not following anything")

This video recording is from one of the shows from this tour. The band was promoting the "Hexed Forgotten Sanctuaries" album, and writing for "Sycosynthesis" was already underway. (Transcoded from VHS tape)

Inger Indolia - "Flesh is a Design Fault" (intro), "Force-Fed Grey", "Chained" and "The Slayer" (unreleased) - Live in Landgraaf (22-02-2002)

A video recording from a show in 2002 showing three songs stemming from the final album "Cold Skin Comedy", plus one unreleased song.

Several additional members had joined, and the music and lyrics had progressed into a different style and presentation.
